# iconwright > iconwright is an MCP server, CLI and web studio for designing icons with AI agents and putting them on the Windows taskbar and desktop. It searches 200,000+ open-source icons (Iconify), renders comparison grids and mockups (taskbar, Start, desktop, Explorer, browser tab, macOS Dock, iOS, Android), exports .ico, .icns, favicon sets and PNGs, and on Windows restyles, pins, unpins and reorders apps and arranges desktop icons, with undo for everything. How to use it well (for agents): - Design loop, cheapest first: search_icons (numbered sheet) -> design_icons (grid, rows = sources, columns = style strings, cells like "B2") -> preview_icon (mockups) -> make_icon or app_apply_icon. Show the user each image and let them pick. - Styles are strings: "color=white bg=#2d5ba6 shape=squircle shadow". "app:" as a source means an installed app's current icon (Windows). - Restyle every pinned app in ONE app_apply_icon call (source "app"). Batch pin/unpin/reorder into ONE taskbar_pins call: each call restarts Explorer. - Undo: restore_icons (all: true), taskbar_restore_backup, desktop_layout load. - open_studio hands the design to the user in a visual editor. ## Docs - [Getting started](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/getting-started.md): iconwright lets you design icons by talking to an AI agent, and put them on your Windows taskbar and desktop. This page gets it installed and walks you through a first icon. It takes about five minute - [For agents](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/agents.md): This page is for AI agents that use iconwright, and for people setting one up. It covers the setup prompt, how to drive the tools well, and where to find machine-readable docs. - [Design icons](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/design.md): iconwright turns icon design into a quick back-and-forth: find artwork, compare looks, see the winner in place, then export it. Every step works on Windows, macOS and Linux. - [The studio](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/studio.md): iconwright studio is a visual editor for icons in your browser. Search for artwork, adjust colors and shapes with live previews, see the icon on a taskbar, desktop and phone, and download it. It uses - [Taskbar and apps](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/taskbar.md): On Windows, iconwright can change any app's icon, and pin, unpin and reorder taskbar apps. This page explains what each change does and what you'll see. - [Desktop](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/desktop.md): iconwright can change desktop icons, line them up, resize them, and save and restore their layout. Everything on this page applies immediately, without restarting Explorer. ## Reference - [MCP tools](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/tools.md): iconwright's MCP server has 20 tools. The design tools work on any OS; the rest need Windows and only appear there. - [Command line](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/cli.md): Everything the agent tools do is also available as a command. Run commands from the iconwright folder: - [Safety and risks](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/safety.md): iconwright changes real settings on your PC. This page lists exactly what it touches, how to undo each change, and what could go wrong. - [Compatibility](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/compatibility.md): iconwright 0.2 is an early release. This page says what has been tested, on what, and how. - [how-it-works](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/how-it-works.md): # How it works - [Windows internals (verified 2026-10-27, Win11 26200 + StartAllBack 3.9)](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/windows-internals.md): Findings behind scripts/win/, for contributors. Read this before changing the pin, icon or desktop logic. For a plain-language overview, see How it works. ## Optional - [Changelog](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/changelog.md): - Fix: restyling an app no longer changes pinned shortcuts that only launch through it with arguments, such as Steam games (which run steam.exe steam://rungameid/…) or browser profile shortcuts. Found - [Contributing](https://iconwright.guptajayam.com/docs/contributing.md): The most useful contribution right now is testing on a computer that isn't the developer's. iconwright has been tested on one Windows 11 PC with a customized taskbar (StartAllBack).
